New Delhi: Free-falling Prithvi Shaw suffered another setback after he was not included in Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad on Tuesday after remaining unsold in the Indian Premier League mega auction.
The top-order batter had began his international career with a bang, scoring a century on his Test debut, against West Indies in Rajkot in 2018. At 18 years and 329 days, Shaw had become the youngest Indian batter to score a hundred on his Test debut.
But since then, Shaw’s career has stumbled with one setback after another as a combination of fitness issues, indiscipline and lack of focus meant he failed to build on his promising start to his India career.
Not only he has been out of the Indian team for several years now, he has also gone unsold in the IPL auction last month after repeated failures for Delhi Capitals.
Amid a bulging waistline after an eight month ban for doping violation, involvement in off-field controversies as well as disciplinary issues led to his downward spiral.
The 25-year-old was dropped midway from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy league stage though he was brought in for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that they went on to win. He scored a couple of 40s and two 30s in the tournament though failing to make a big score.
‘Tell me god’
But it wasn’t enough to get nod in Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad as troubles keep on monting for the right handed opener.
“Tell me God, what more do I have to see? If 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126 (in Vijay Hazare), I’m not good enough. But I will keep my faith in you and, hopefully, people still believe in me, because I will come back for sure. Om Sai Ram,” Shaw wrote on Instagram.
Shreyas Iyer will lead the 17-member squad for the first three matches of the tournament that begins on December 21 after Ajinkya Rahane had been the skipper last season.
Iyer recently said that the ‘god-gifted’ Shaw must take responsibility for his troubles and work his way into form after getting inputs from big names including Sachin Tendulkar.
Mumbai will begin their campaign against Karnataka in Ahmedabad on December 21.
The squad:
Shreyas lyer (Captain), Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Jay Bista, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Siddhesh Lad, Hardik Tamore, Prasad Pawar (WK), Atharva Ankolekar, Tanush Kotian, Shardul Thakur, Royston Dias, Juned Khan, Harsh Tanna, Vinayak Bhor.
