Bayern Munich women stay top with hard-fought victory over SGS Essen

New Delhi: Bayern Munich Women continued their unbeaten run with a 2-0 victory over SGS Essen in the Frauen-Bundesliga. The result extended their streak to nine matches across all competitions and maintained their slim lead at the top of the table, just one point ahead of rivals VfL Wolfsburg.

Bayern started on the front foot as they dominated possession and creating early chances. Giulia Gwinn’s precise delivery caused problems for the Essen defense, with goalkeeper Sophia Winkler forced into a series of crucial saves, including one to deny Pernille Harder’s close-range header.

Despite their dominance, Bayern struggled to find the final touch until the 30th minute. Gwinn’s sharp pass found Alara Sehitler, who cleverly chipped the ball over the defense for Harder to calmly convert. The goal rewarded Bayern’s relentless pressure and gave them a deserved lead heading into halftime.

Winkler continued to frustrate Bayern, making further saves to deny efforts from Klara Buhl and Harder. The Danish forward thought she had a second goal, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Stanway sealed the deal for Bayern

Essen came out stronger in the second half, with Laureta Elmazi firing wide early on and Ramona Maier forcing Bayern keeper Ena Mahmutovic into action. The hosts pressed aggressively, creating nervy moments for Bayern.

However, Bayern regained composure and came close to doubling their lead when substitutes Jovana Damnjanovic and Linda Dallmann combined, though Dallmann’s shot was blocked. Georgia Stanway also tested Winkler from range before sealing the win in added time. The Essen keeper had ventured forward for a late corner, leaving her net unguarded, and Stanway calmly slotted the ball into the empty goal from distance.
