New Delhi: Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer has been struck with a fine after his team failed to meet the required over-rate during their four-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday. Punjab completed a double over Chennai in the ongoing season as they secured an emphatic victory in the return leg encounter, but were penalised for maintaining a slow over-rate.
Iyer was handed a fine of Rs. 12 lakh as this was the first over-rate offence committed by PBKS in IPL 2025. “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Shreyas Iyer was fined Rs 12 Lakh,” an IPL media release stated on Thursday.
It is understood that the IPL has done away with banning the skippers in the upcoming games as a punishment for these over-rate offences, and the players will rather get demerit points and infield restrictions. Therefore, PBKS were forced to bring in an extra fielder inside the circle before the start of the 19th over. However, that didn’t hamper Yuzvendra Chahal, who went on to claim four wickets in that over, including a second IPL hat-trick.
