Paris 2024 Olympics: Triathlon training cancelled for second day over pollution in River Seine

New Delhi: Paris 2024 organisers cancelled the Olympics Triathlon swimming training for a second successive day due to pollution in the River Seine. Heavy rains in Paris polluted the river’s waterways, forcing the cancellation of training. The organisers, though, are confident of hosting the “medal events” this week.

Paris officials and World Triathlon, in a joint statement, said that the “poor water quality” levels in River Seine forced the cancellation of the training for a second successive day.

The triathlon is the first Olympic event scheduled to be held in River Seine ahead of the marathon swimming, which is due to be held in the second week of the Games. A training session slated for Sunday was also cancelled due to the pollution levels.

The men’s individual triathlon is slated to begin on Tuesday while the women’s event is scheduled to be held on Wednesday.

The water quality of the River Seine depends on the amount of rain that falls in and around the French capital.

Heavy rains during the opening ceremony of the Games on Friday affected the city’s sewage system, leading to the release of untreated liquid waste into the waterway.

Organisers confident of hosting Swimming Triathlon

Despite the rise in pollution levels, the Paris 2024 organisers and World Triathlon are confident that water quality will improve significantly before the start of the competition on Tuesday. The weather has improved significantly in the French capital with the sun beating down in Paris since Sunday morning.

The Seine has been failing water tests until the start of July due to a wet spring and the start of summer.

In case the water quality doesn’t improve, the Paris 2024 organisers can delay the outdoor swimming events by several days.

They have said that if need be they will cancel the swimming leg of the triathlon and move the marathon swimming to Vaires-sur-Marne, on the Marne river east of Paris.

French authorities have invested billions of Euros over the last decade to clean up the Seine.
