New Delhi: Suryakumar Yadav was awarded the fielder of the match medal by the Indian cricket team after their T20 World Cup title triumph. The medal was handed over to him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jay Shah after India’s win over South Africa in the final in Bridgetown on Saturday.
The fielder of the match medal is a custom within the Indian team for which a player is chosen as its recipient after every match. The tradition began during the 2023 ODI World Cup with fielding coach T Dilip ususally handing over the medal.
But following India’s triumph, BCCI secretary Jay Shah was in preson present in the dressing room to hand over the medal to Yadav, whose stunning catch on the long off boundary line in the last over the match dismissed David Miller and helped India win by seven runs.
“We talk about raising to the occasion on big days but tonight we did not just rise, we conquered too, The intensity, the camaraderie, the resilience what we have shown today and also throughout the tournament was nothing short of extraordinary.
“Like a pack of wolves, like Rahul (Dravid) Bhai and Rohit (Sharma) bhai keep saying everybody knew their role but together we hunted every opportunity that came our way leaving no stone unturned,” Dilip said in a video posted by BCCI on social media channels.
With South Africa needing 16 runs off the last over of the match, Miller lifted the first ball off Pandya towards the long-off boundary. Yadav ran to his left and maintained balance to first catch the ball and then had the presence of mind heto lift the ball back on the ground while crossing over the line and then jumping back on to the field to complete the catch.
‘Thank you so much Dilip sir for giving me this opportunity and collecting this medal from Jay (Shah) sir. Well done everyone!” Yadav said.
