‘Become a joke’: Rohit Sharma’s indirect dig on players reversing their retirement

New Delhi: Indian captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20 Internationals after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 on June 29. He is now focused on Test cricket, where The Men in Blue will hope to make it to their third consecutive World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025.

He led his team from the front in the T20 World Cup and was India’s highest run-getter in the tournament. He scored 257 runs in 8 matches at an average of 35.12. After the T20 World Cup, Rohit also lead the team in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. He is expected to continue playing in the Indian Premier League but it remains to be seen whether he will continue to play for Mumbai Indians (MI) or will join any new franchise.

Rohit and Co. will face Bangladesh in the two-match Test series at home, starting on September 19. After that, Team India will take on New Zealand in the three-match Test series in October. Rohit’s big assignment will be the five-match Test series against Australia which will start from November 22.

‘Players announce retirement but then return to play cricket’: Rohit Sharma

In an interview with Jio Cinema, Rohit talked about his T20I retirement and said he’s not coming back in the T20I set-up. He further added that retirement has become a joke these days in the world of cricket and players announce their retirement but then return and play cricket again.

“Retirement has become a joke these days in world cricket, people announce retirement but then return to play just like that. Yes, it hasn’t happened in India a lot. However, I have been observing players from other countries. They announce retirement but then return and play cricket. You don’t get to understand whether someone has retired or not” Rohit Sharma said in an interaction with JioCinema.

He also added that it was the perfect time to say goodbye to the format “I am very clear. That was it. It was the perfect time for me to say goodbye to the format. I started playing this format for India, I made my debut in ODIs, but straightaway went on to play T20 World Cup in 2007. We won that. I have now won another World Cup” he added.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma ruled out any chance of coming back to T20I cricket and said that his decision to retire form the format is final.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
