New Delhi: MS Dhoni is known for his calm and composed attitude on the field and the India legend rarely loses his cool even in the most pressure situations. However, there have been several instances of the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain getting angry with his players while leading the team in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Former CSK pacer Mohit Sharma recently recalled one such instance when Dhoni vented out his frustration and gave an earful to Deepak Chahar after repeated mistakes from the bowler. Mohit played for Chennai Super for three seasons from 2013 to 2015 during his first stint with the franchise before rejoining them ahead of the 2019 season.
In his latest appearance on the ‘2 Sloggers’ podcast on YouTube, Mohit revealed Dhoni might not lose his cool on the opposition players but he gets angry a lot with his teammates. The pacer revealed he has heard a lot of abuses from Dhoni being a fast bowler, but the former CSK skipper gives equal love to his players.
Mohit recalled how Dhoni gave an earful to Chahar during the IPl 2019 season after the pacer bowled a knuckle ball despite being asked by the captain to not bowl it. Dhoni advised Chahar not to use the knuckle ball again after the first one slipped out of his hand and became a full toss for the batter. However, Chahar bowled another one 2-3 balls later, which infuriated Dhoni, who got his arms around the pacer’s shoulders and gave him a dressing down on the field.
“Deepak Chahar has also received a lot of abuses. He too has a story. In 2019, Deepak was playing, and I was not. The game was in Chennai, and everyone was sweating profusely. He bowled a knuckle ball that I think was a full toss or something, which was hit for either a four or a six. Dhoni bhai told him not to bowl it again. He said, ‘ok Mahi bhai’. After bowling the next 2-3 balls, he bowled the knuckle ball again,” Mohit recalled on the podcast.
“Mahi bhai came up to him, kept his arms around Deepak’s shoulder, said a few things to him and went back. We obviously didn’t know. So when the match got over, we asked Deepak what happened? He said, ‘You know what he said? He said a few wonderful things (likely abuses), and then he added ‘Bewakoof tu nahi hai, bewakoof main hu (You are not the fool, Iam the fool),” Mohit added.
MS Dhoni shares great bond with Deepak Chahar
Despite scolding him often over his mistakes with the ball, Dhoni shares a great bond with Chahar, who has been with CSK since the 2018 season. Chahar has himself admitted on several occasions in the past that Dhoni loves him and has played an instrumental role in his rise as a bowler. Chahar earned his India debut in 2018 after his impressive show for CSK and has been a vital cog in the franchise’s pace attack.
Chahar has so far played 76 matches for CSK and has picked up 76 wickets at an economy rate of 7.91. It remains to be seen if the five-time champions will retain the pacer or will he be released ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
