Bibek Debroy, chairman of PM Modi’s economic advisory council, passes away

Bibek Debroy, the economist and chairman of the economic advisory council of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, passed away on Friday at the age of 69. He played a key role in shaping the economic policies of the nation. Also, he was the Chairman of the ‘Expert Committee for Infrastructure Classification and Financing Framework for Amrit Kaal’ of the Finance Ministry.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his grief over Debroy’s death. “Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and more. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape. Beyond his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth,” he posted on his official X handle.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan called Debroy an “excellent academician” and posted on his official X handle, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Bibek Debroy. He was a distinguished economist, a prolific author as well as an excellent academician. He will be admired for his policy guidance on economic issues and noteworthy contributions to India’s development. His columns in newspapers enriched and enlightened millions. Dr. Debroy leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of economics, academia and literature. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. May Almighty grant Sadgati to the departed. Debroy made a lasting impact on economic theory, game theory, income and social inequalities, poverty, reforms, law reforms and Indology among other things. He co-authored the magnum opus ‘Inked in India’, which is hailed as a premier comprehensive documentation that captures the history of ink manufacturers,m fountain pens, and nibs in India. He was a member of the NITI Aayog, the Indian government’s think tank from January 2015, till June 2019. In 2015, he was honoured with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour.

 Bibek Debroy played a key role in shaping the economic policies of the nation.
