Chennai: “Bring my husband to me. I want to see him; I want to see him with my own eyes. I want my husband back,” cried the 45-year-old woman, Hema Kumari, wife of G Siva Shankar, 48, who died in Wednesday’s Kuwait fire accident, to the media people who visited her house on Thursday.

The deceased man was identified as G Sivasankar, 48, of Royapuram. He worked as a car driver. Hema Kumari resides in a house in Corporation Colony First Lane in Royapuram with her son and daughter. He had approached an agency to work as a driver for a private company in Kuwait last year on a two-year contract. He went to Kuwait in April 2023 and was supposed to return to Chennai in 2025. “I know him well. He is a strong person, and no one can do any harm to my husband,” said Hema Kumari to the media people who gathered at her house on Thursday after the Kuwait government declared him as one of the deceased persons in the fire accident.

Hema Kumari said, “She was informed by her husband’s colleagues soon after the fire accident that her husband was safe, as his name had not popped up on the deceased people’s list.” Later, a few others informed her that her husband was missing from his accommodation site.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday night, she received a message from some other colleagues that her husband, Siva Shankar, had died in a fire accident. The woman, Hemakumari, alleged that she would believe it only after seeing her husband’s body. She has requested the state government to help her bring her husband’s mortal remains from Kuwait to at least pay him the last rites.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has announced Rs 5 lakh solatium to the family members of the deceased people.
