Brisbane Supreme Court rejects Michael Slater’s bail plea again, to remain behind bars

New Delhi: Former Australia cricketer Michael Slater has been denied bail for a second time by the Supreme Court in Brisbane, being apprehended for as many as 25 charges including domestic violence. Other accusations are that of some serious offenses including assault, choking, and burglary – all linked to incidents that happened in the Noosa region between December 2023 and early 2024.

54-year-old Slater played 74 Test matches for Australia from 1993 to 2001 and was a part of the ODI outfit till 1997. In his Test career, he amassed 5312 runs including 14 centuries, and represented Australia in 42 ODIs. Slater has been in custody since April and is alleged to have stalked a woman and sent her as many as 100 text messages per day, several of which were reportedly abusive.

The situation went out of hands when the woman, who had already filed a complaint at a local police station, received a notification on her phone about the security camera installed at her home, which showed Slater breaking into her home. The incident led to Slater’s arrest.

Slater’s plea; rejection ground

A hearing was conducted in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday where it was put forth that Slater had been in custody for 130 days after he was denied bail in April. Greg McQuire, Slater’s counselor, argued that there was a “very real danger” his client could spend “too much time in custody” before the case gets resolved. McQuire proposed a series of plans in order to release Slater – an alcohol prohibition, stay at a Sydney rehabilitation facility, and move home with his sister in New South Wales, from where he belongs.

The counselor focused on Slater’s alleged offenses being linked to his alcohol use and now that he has spent time in custody, it has helped him to “sever” his dependence on alcohol.

Despite all the arguments, Justice Paul Freeburn rejected Slater’s bail appeal, reasoning that the offenses spanned several months and also doubting if the proposed conditions might mitigate the risk of offenses further. Slater will continue to remain behind bars as the legal proceedings go on.
