Lock them in a room and show them Musheer Khan’s innings: Ex-Pakistan star slams PCB

New Delhi: Former Pakistan wicket-keeper batter Kamran Akmal recently slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for prioritising the Champions One-Day Cup over working on revamping their domestic structure to provide a pathway for development of the young talent in the country. Akmal cited the example of young Indian batter Musheer Khan’s terrific century in the ongoing Duleep Trophy to highlight his point.

Playing for India B in their clash against India A, 19-year-old Musheer hammered a sensational knock of 181 runs laced with 16 fours and 5 sixes in the Duleep Trophy. With his team reduced to tatters at 94/7. Musheer turned out to be the saviour for the Abhimanyu Easwaran-led side with his incredible knock. In awe of the youngster’s batting heroics, Akmal urged the PCB to adopt India’s domestic structure which focuses on giving chances to the youngsters.

The PCB has decided to launch the inaugural season of the Champions One-Day Cup on September 12 this year. The tournament will feature the top talents from across Pakistan and some of the yesteryear greats of Pakistan cricket, including the likes of Waqar Younis, Misbah-ul-Haq and Shoaib Malik among others have been appointed mentors of the five teams that will be taking part on the 50-over competition.

However, the competition has faced opposition from several former cricketers, who have called it a ‘waste of time’ while asking the PCB to focus on improving the domestic structure in Pakistan cricket. Retaliating the same Akmal said the board is overly optimistic regarding the tournament.

“In my view, the Champions One-Day Cup is a waste of time and money. These decisions will have huge ramifications, leading to a loss of interest in the game and ruining the thought process of so many kids who look up to the game. It’s a concerning situation,” Akmal said in a YouTube chat show.

‘Show them Musheer Khan’s innings’

To further illustrate his point, Akmal pointed out Musheer’s innings for India B in the Duleep Trophy and said that’s how young talent is developed in the right manner. He slammed the PCB officials (in favour of the Champions One-Day Cup) by stating that they should be locked in a room and shown Musheer’s innings on television so they can learn from the BCCI.

“Today India’s Musheer Khan scored 181. So I think someone should lock those PCB officials ( who suggested this idea of the Champions Cup) in a room and show them Musheer Khan’s innings from the Duleep Trophy. Explain to them that this is how players are made,” Akmal added.
