New Delhi: An emotional Carlos Alcaraz was in tears after losing the men’s singles tennis gold medal match against Novak Djokovic at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday, August 04. Alcaraz was bidding to become the youngest man to win the gold medal at the Olympics. However, his hopes were dashed by the experienced Djokovic, who came out on top in the much-awaited contest.

Alcaraz was considered the favourite heading into the gold medal match at his debut Olympic campaign having won the French Open and Wimbledon titles earlier this year. The Spanish ace had defeated Djokovic in a lop-sided final at Wimbledon to stop the 37-year-old from winning his 25th Grand Slam title.

However, on Sunday as both superstars battled for their maiden Olympic gold medal, it was Djokovic who reigned supreme. The Serbian defeated Alcaraz 7-6 (3), 7-6(2) in an intense contest that lasted two hours and 52 minutes. The gold medal triumph at the Paris Olympics saw Djokovic become only the 5th player in history to complete a Career Golden Slam in singles.

It was agony on the other side as Alcaraz was clearly dejected after his defeat. The 21-year-old was seen breaking down uncontrollably as tears rolled down his cheeks during a TV interview after his loss against Djokovic. The video of Alcaraz crying after the loss left his fans heartbroken.

Opening up on his emotional breakdown after his loss in the final, Alcaraz said he felt he let the Spanish people down with his defeat as they had high expectations from him.

“I feel that I let the Spanish people down. I feel they were waiting for the gold medal. I got emotional because I couldn’t make the Spanish people proud. That’s (why) I got emotional,” said the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion.

Novak Djokovic conquers tennis with Olympic gold

Regarded as one of the greatest of all time, 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic conquered tennis after winning his maiden Olympic gold medal on Sunday. The Serbian legend, who owns the record for most Grand Slams in men’s tennis, has won everything there is to be and has nothing left to prove anymore.

He became only the fifth player after the likes of Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams to win all Grand Slams and the Olympic gold medal in singles.
