New Delhi: Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz continued his winning run in the ongoing Rotterdam Open as he eased into the quarterfinals of the event with a comfortable straight sets victory. Alcaraz beat Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori 6-2, 6-1 in what turned out to be a one-sided clash. Top-seeded Alcaraz, who got off to a flying start, did not give a chance for his opponent to bounce back in the match as he completed dominated both the sets.

The Spanish player displayed a lot of power and accuracy, that proved too much for Italian Vavassori, who’s ranked 317 in the world. The contest lasted for just over an hour and saw the Spanish dominated the proceedings from the beginning. The last score line suggested it all as Italian found it very hard to tackle the powerful backhands and forehands of Alcaraz.

Alcaraz to face Martinez for semis place

The victory over Vavassori was quite different from his first-round match, where he took almost three hours to dispatch local player Botic van de Zandschulp. The Spanish player will now face Pedro Martinez for a place in the semifinals of the event after his Martinez beat Danish fifth seed Holger Rune 6-4, 6-1. ‘Today, I think I hit everything pretty well. I’m just hopeful I can keep going and be a bit better next round,’ said the Spaniard after the match.

Meanwhile, Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas saved a match point and fought from a set down to overcome local man Tallon Griekspoor in a three-hour marathon. The world number 12 overcame his Dutch opponent with a score line of 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 in a match that lasted almost three hours. The player from Greece will now face Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci for a place in the semifinals. Bellucci, earlier, shocked second seed Daniil Medvedev in a marathon three-setter.
