New Delhi: Chelsea’s current owner, Todd Boehly has consented to purchase a 49% stake in the Hundred team Trent Rockets. With a valuation of £79 million for the entire franchise, Cain International, which was created by American Boehly and British businessman Jonathan Goldstein, will pay just under £40 million for the Rockets’ share. The remaining 51% will remain in the hands of Nottinghamshire, the Rockets’ host at Trent Bridge.

Before a 49% interest in the Lord’s squad was sold to a Silicon Valley consortium for £145 million, Cain, a real estate investment firm, was in the hunt for a piece of London Spirit. With the Rockets’ sale, the total amount of money sold for stakes in seven hundred clubs to date has surpassed £500 million. The total worth of the seven hundred franchises is approximately £820 million. Later this week, the Southern Brave will be the eighth and last franchise to be sold.

Following their acquisition of the hosts, Hampshire, they are probably going to the Delhi Capitals, co-owners of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team. Boehly became chairman at Stamford Bridge after leading a consortium that paid £4.25 billion to acquire Premier League team Chelsea in May 2022. Goldstein is on the board of the club as well. In addition to holding stock in over a dozen other sports-related companies through his conglomerate Eldridge Industries, Boehly is a minority owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.

Other teams and their share percentages

Nottinghamshire have been the fifth hosts to sell a 49% part in their Hundred franchise. In exchange for a 49% share in Oval Invincibles, Surrey negotiated a £60 million price with the proprietors of the IPL team Mumbai Indians. The county kept the 51% that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had granted them. For £40 million, Warwickshire agreed to sell 49% of Birmingham Phoenix to Knighthead Capital, the proprietors of Birmingham City FC, while Glamorgan sold the same portion of Welsh Fire to IT entrepreneur Sanjay Govil.

A group headed by Nikesh Arora reached an agreement with Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) to purchase a 49% stake in London Spirit. When Lancashire reached an agreement with the owners of the IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants for almost £81 million to purchase 70% of Manchester Originals, they became the first county to sell a portion of their ownership. When the Sun Group, the owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad, agreed to pay just over £100 million for Northern Superchargers, Yorkshire became the first county to sell their full stake.

The MCC, the recreational game, and the 18 first-class counties will receive the majority of the proceeds from the sales. Now, all agreements go through an eight-week exclusivity period to complete the collaborations.
