Chelsea transfer news: Five players that could leave the London side this January

New Delhi: English club Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in world football and part of being that means competing on multiple fronts in almost every season. One way of doing that is expanding your squad to the best of your capabilities and doing so involves bringing in talent. Chelsea currently don’t have a dearth of talent on their books and it’s not easy to keep everyone happy with their playing time.

Head coach Enzo Maresca has already figured out which players work in his system and which don’t. Moreover, he’s already knows his best starting XI and those around it meaning those who haven’t been able to establish themselves in this time, stand a good chance of heading out the exit door in this window. Chelsea have one of the biggest squad in the Premier League currently and have quite a few players on their books that might not be at the club come February.

5) Cesare Casadei

The Italian midfielder was one of Italy’s hottest prospects during his time in Inter Milan’s youth academy and his capture created a lot of buzz amongst those that follow Italian football. The 21-year-old joined Chelsea’s youth set up in 2022 and impressed for the club’s U21 side. He was then loaned out to Reading in January 2023 to gain experience in senior football but was part of the Reading squad that got relegated that season as he made 15 appearances for them. Capable of playing as both, a holding and attacking midfielder, Casadei offers a lot of versatility.

He was then loaned out to Leicester City last season where he played under current Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca but was only a bit part player for the Foxes. He made 22 appearances in the Championship but it only amounted to 875 minutes on the pitch. That was a clear indication that Casadei is not the type of player Maresca would want and only five UECL appearances this season highlight that even more. Clubs like Torino and Napoli have shown an interest in bringing the midfielder back to Italy this month and it seems like he’s certain to be heading back to his home nation.

4) Carney Chukwuemenka

Another young talent that Chelsea bought recently but hasn’t been given a lot of minutes on the pitch is English midfielder Carney Chukwuemenka. Signed during the 2022/23 season, Chukwuemenka was brought in for a hefty price for a player of his age and experience but the potential was always visible. The now 21-year-old midfielder faced a lot of competition for places early on in his Chelsea career and then suffered recurring injuries which have hampered his progress a lot. He’s made 23 appearances in the league for the club but they’ve all mostly been sporadic appearances off the bench.

He’s played less than 900 minutes of Premier League football in the past two seasons for the club owing to the reasons mentioned above but he’s always shown the talent he possess. However, just like Casadei, he’s also someone who doesn’t feature in Maresca’s plans and has played little over two hours worth of football this season. He was supposed to have left the club in the summer but didn’t find any suitors and continues to be linked with a move away. Chelsea believe he has a high ceiling and want to double on their investment, which makes a loan a more believable move in this window.

3) Axel Disasi

Axel Disasi’s case a little bit different from the two names mentioned above as the French defender has featured fairly regularly for the Blues this season. Although, why that has happened has puzzled every Chelsea fan out there. The 26-year-old has been extremely error-prone on the field and his errors have costed the club on multiple occasions, with the most recent one gifting Ipswich Town their second goal in their win over Chelsea.

Disasi has made 15 appearances for the club all season while captaining the side in the UEFA Conference League but the club are reportedly looking to cash in on the defender. Signed from Monaco in the summer of last year, Disasi never felt like someone who’s at Chelsea’s level as he has always been prone to mistakes. Maresca’s patience with the player seems to have run out and Chelsea should be looking to move him on from the club as soon as they can.

2) Kieran Dewsbury Hall

A somewhat surprising name on the list but not so much if you think about it. Kiernan Dewsbury Hall only joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024 in a £30 million deal from Leicester City. He excelled in the Championship under Enzo Maresca, contributing to 26 goals all season which prompted the Blues to buy the midfielder. Maresca transformed his career at the King Power Stadium and Dewsbury Hall was brought in to help recreate that in the Premier League. However, reports now claim that the club are willing to listen to offers for him.

The move to Chelsea been a complete disaster with Dewsbury Hall not being given minutes regularly. The English midfielder has only made five appearances in the league, playing a measly 55 minutes of Premier League football. The rest of his 15 appearances have come through cup competitions with him scoring twice and assisting another in the UEFA Conference League this season. Maresca’s has often indicated in conferences that it will be difficult for Dewsbury Hall at Chelsea but now it seems like he might leave the club just six months after joining.

1) Christopher Nkunku

The biggest name on the list and one of the biggest stars at Chelsea currently, Christopher Nkunku could be allowed to leave the club if the Frenchman wishes too. Reports have been circulating since the end of November with the Frenchman being unhappy with his gametime this season. Nkunku is Chelsea’s current top scorer this season having scored 12 goals in addition to assisting four more in 27 games this season but he is firmly the second choice at the club.

Nicholas Jackson is ahead of him in the number nine position whereas nobody can touch Cole Palmer’s spot in the team. With neither close to being dropped, Nkunku has been forced to accept a bit part role in the squad this season. While he has made 18 appearances in the league this season, only three of them have been starts and has played less than 400 minutes in the league. Nkunku is a brilliant player and would be a starter at any club competing for Europe and he could leave this month if he himself wishes to.
