New Delhi: Chelsea, in pursuit of more silverware, will begin their FIFA Club World Cup campaign against Los Angeles FC. This maiden battle pits the UEFA Conference League champions against the U.S. Open Cup holders, with the MLS side taking a unique path to qualify for the home tournament.
The Blues have added both the Champions League and Conference League titles to their growing trophy cabinet in the last four years. Their ticket to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup was sealed the moment they triumphed over Manchester City in the 2020–21 Champions League final. Since then, Chelsea have etched their name into European football history, becoming the first club to win all four major UEFA competitions. This year, their only trophy came with a commanding 4-1 victory over Real Betis in the Conference League final that capped off an impressive debut season for head coach Enzo Meresca. He also guided Chelsea back into the Champions League.
Ending their campaign with eight wins in their last nine matches, Meresca’s side will enter their third Club World Cup appearance in fine form. They lifted the trophy in 2021–22 after defeating Palmeiras in extra time while their debut in 2013 ended with a runner-up finish to Corinthians. This time, they will face another Brazilian challenge in Group D- Flamengo alongside Tunisian side Esperance de Tunis.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles FC weren’t initially expected to feature in the tournament. However, after CONCACAF Champions League winners Club Leon were removed due to FIFA’s multi-club ownership rules, LAFC earned their spot with a 2-1 extra-time win over Club America in a play-in clash. The MLS outfit, current US Open Cup holders, are riding a 10-game unbeaten streak and have been in strong attacking form, scoring at least twice in each of those matches. Now, with their domestic chase temporarily on pause, LAFC gear up for a high-stakes Club World Cup debut.
