Chennai: In a major milestone for the city’s public transportation system, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to conduct a test run of its driverless metro train in October. The test run will take place on the Poonamallee-Light House line, marking a significant step towards the implementation of driverless technology in the Chennai Metro.
Driverless trains will run in Chennai Metro phase -2
According to CMRL officials, the electrification work for the driverless metro trains has already commenced, with ballastless tracks being laid at the Poonamallee depot. The depot, spread over 42 acres, will be able to handle 26 three/six-car driverless trains.

The CMRL has ordered 138 three-coach driverless trains for Phase II of the Chennai Metro project, which includes three corridors – Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Light House to Poonamallee, and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. While the trains will be driverless, Roving Assistants will be deployed initially to assist in case of glitches or emergencies.
The Phase II Metro Rail Project spans 116.1 km and includes the construction of 9 underground and 18 elevated metro stations on the Lighthouse-Poontamalli route. Work on the high-level route, tunnel work, and metro station construction is underway.

Driverless metro train is expected to be brought to Chennai in August
Alstom Transport India has been awarded the contract to manufacture 26 three-car driverless metro trains and 36 metro trains for the second phase. The first driverless metro train is expected to be brought to Chennai in August, with metro rail services expected to be operational on a 16 km stretch by the end of next year.
The Chennai Metro project aims to reduce traffic congestion in the city, with services currently operational on two routes – Airport to Wimco Nagar and St Thomas Mount to Central – spanning 54 km. The introduction of driverless trains is expected to further enhance the efficiency and safety of the metro rail system.
