New Delhi: The SDAT Squash World Cup will be back in Chennai this year with the Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) will be hosting the event from December 9 to 14, as announced by the World Squash in a release on Monday.

This is a team event, which was also hosted in Chennai in June 2023 at the Express Avenue Mall. Each country can field two men’s singles players and two women’s singles players in a team. Each player will play best-of-five ties in a match. A player needs to score seven points and in case of tie at 6-6, a sudden death (where a golden point) needs to be sealed by either player to account for the tie.

Egypt are the defending champions of the tournament after defeating Malaysia in the final of the last edition. India made it to the semifinal stage before facing a defeat to Malaysia by 3-0.

Chennai’s Squash Legacy: A Hub for the Sport’s Development

The Tamil Nadu government will once again be the sponsor of the Squash World Cup this year, and it will be supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sport in India. The tournament will be played inside a glass court at the Express Avenue mall.

“I’m so pleased to be able to announce the return of the Squash World Cup and my thanks to the Tamil Nadu government, the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and everyone at SRFI for making the return of the World Cup possible,” said World Squash president Zena Wooldridge.

Chennai has been a hotbed for squash with the Indian Squash Academy was started in 1990. The facility hosts the squash nationals every year and now back-to-back World Cup events in the Tamil Nadu capital city only advocates for the development of the racquet sport. This is also a crucial moment for squash players in the country after the sport was included in the 2028 Olympic Games.

The SDAT Squash World Cup returns to Chennai from December 9 to 14, hosted by the SRFI. The tournament will be held at the Express Avenue Mall, showcasing India’s growing squash scene, particularly after the sport’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics.  Other Sports Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
