Climate change: How can this dangerous threat impact human health?

New Delhi: Climate change is a threat which has put the very existence of this planet in jeopardy. It is massively impacting the environment and has disturbed the seasonal changes. While some places in the world are experiencing floods due to it, there are some which are going through drought because of climate change. It is affecting human health in a great way and in this article, we will take a look at how it is impacting our lives.

How does climate change impact human health?

Climate change impacts human health both directly and indirectly. It results in rising sea levels, extreme heat waves, and changes in precipitation which lead to droughts and flooding, and intense hurricanes which disrupt human lives. It alters the environment which massively affects us.

For instance, if the levels of air pollution increase, then it will negatively impact our respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. Changes in temperature and rainfall can change the behaviours of insects leading to changes in infectious diseases while an increase in precipitation, sea temperature and storm surge would result in more illnesses from water. Climate change can also expose people to contaminated foods and can also affect mental health and well-being.

According to the United Nations, climate disasters wreak havoc on farmland and threaten coastal fisheries which impacts food production. It leads to an increase in food prices and hunger, and along with inequalities and political and social exclusion which already exist, it can lead to unrest. Also, it is leading to the displacement of people all over the world. Each year, over 20 million people are forced to abandon their homes and migrate to some other place because of extreme weather events like water scarcity, prolonged droughts, extremely heavy rainfall, environmental degradation, sea-level rise, desertification, and cyclones.

The poor suffer the most

Climate change affects those the most who belong to the poor and vulnerable section of society. In those nations which are economically poor, most of the population is directly dependent on those works that climate change affects the most, like agriculture, farming, fishery and forestry. Those in the low-income group are the ones who are most likely to depend on resources provided by nature. According to a report by the World Bank, by 2030 an additional 68 to 135 million people could fall into poverty due to climate change.
