Congress tweet on Modi-Pope meet courts controversy, finally pulls out tendering apology

Thiruvananthapuram: A sarcastic post by the ‘Congress Kerala’ twitter handler on Sunday that said ‘Finally, the Pope got a chance to meet God’ referring to the meeting between PM Modi and Pope turned out to be a point of heated debate and political war of words between the BJP and the Congress when former lashing out at the grand-old party for allegedly mocking the Pope and the Christian community.

It all began on Sunday afternoon when the Congress party’s official twitter handler ‘Congress Kerala’ tweeting the picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeting the Pope with a one-liner above the picture saying – ‘Finally, the Pope got a chance to meet the God’.

BJP state president K Surendran and Union minister George Kurien harshly criticized the Congress party for mocking the Christian community for allegedly posting an insensitive comment.

K Surendran said, “The @INCIndia Kerala “X” handle, seemingly run by radical Islamists or Urban Naxals, continues to post derogatory and humiliating content against nationalistic leaders. Now, it has even stooped to mocking the respected Pope and the Christian community. It’s certain that the AICC General Secretary from Kerala, @kcvenugopalmp, is aware of this. The question is, what are @RahulGandhi and @kharge’s interests in supporting this?”.

This was followed by a post by Union minister George Kurien who said that ‘the tweet by Congress, equates Prime Minister Modi to Lord Jesus. This is absolutely uncalled for and is an insult to the Christian community, who revere Jesus and it is shameful that the Congress has stooped to this level’, it read.

After the tweet ran into controversy, the state unit of the party removed the tweet from its handle and sought an unconditional apology.

Issuing an apology over the tweet, the Kerala Congress said people know that insulting religion, clergy or any deity is not the tradition of the party. “The party holds together all religions and faiths. The Congress does not have a distant thought to insult the Pope, respected by Christians across the world. At the same, the party has no hesitation to criticize Narendra Modi who insults the faithful in the country by claiming himself as God,” the handle tweeted.
