New Delhi: India’s 58-run loss at the hands of New Zealand in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 opener wasn’t a mere 20-over per side game as it involved a heated debate between the Indian camp spearheaded by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and head coach Amol Muzumdar. The Friday clash saw the Kiwis outclassing Team India in every department and registering a dominant victory to start their campaign on a bright note.
But… before it all came to an end, the game saw a brief but considerable pause. The instance brought all the Indian players surrounding the on-field umpires over a call that they deemed was incorrect. It all happened during New Zealand’s innings as India put them to bat first. In what was a shocking moment in the clash, the Women in Blue ultimately had to settle with the decision, losing the game and taking a major dent in their two-match (warm-up) win confidence.
What was the controversy?
During the 14th over that was being bowled by India all-rounder Deepti Sharma, and skipper Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr were in the middle, something rare occurred. Taking strike for the final ball, Kerr slapped the outside off length delivery to long-off to comfortably take a single. However, the Kiwi batters wanted to go for another one and while trying to do so, Kerr was run out as Harmanpreet threw the ball to the keeper from the long-off area.
Even Kerr had started walking back but the umpires called the batter back to the crease, irking the Indian camp which ensued a heated debate.
