New Delhi: India completed their revenge for the heartbreaking defeat in the 2023 ODI World Cup final last year by knocking Australia out of the T20 World Cup 2024. India thrashed the Aussies by 24 runs in their final Super Eight game to push them on the brink of elimination before Afghanistan’s memorable win against Bangladesh confirmed their exit from the tournament.
Australia proved to be India’s nemesis in major ICC tournaments last year as Rohit Sharma & Co. lost two big finals against them. India lost the World Test Championship final against Australia before going down in the 2023 ODI World Cup final despite having enjoyed an unbeaten run till the summit clash. India’s win against Australia in T20 World Cup 2024 on Monday thus sent many Indian fans into jubilation.
An Indian fan was spotted mocking Australia’s Test and ODI skipper Pat Cummins after India’s victory against Australia at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia. Cummins remained unbeaten as Australia failed to chase down the target of 206 runs against the Men in Bleu. As the Australian pacer walked back to the dressing, an Indian fan was heard mocking him from the stands, reminding him of the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
“Hey Pat, that’s for 2023,” the fan can be heard shouting from the stands as Cummins walked back with his head down. “That’s a revenge for 2023. Remember Ahmedabad? And you are going home tomorrow,” the fan continues as Cummins continues walking. The video of the incident went viral on social media.
Hey Pat Cummins this was for 2023.
Now in future both Afghanistan and India will make sure that your cricket does not survive.#IndvsAus #AfgvsBanpic.twitter.com/lzyrQwCGxO

Australia fall short
In pursuit of a hefty target of 206 runs, Australia lost opener David Warner early in their chase but Travis Head and skipper Marsh kept them in the hunt with an 81-run stand for the second wicket. The duo looked in control of the proceedings and made Australia appear favourites at one point in the chase. However, Marsh’s dismissal triggered a collapse as Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals to eventually fall short in the chase.
Head turned out to be the lone warrior for them with a 43-ball 76 but his knock was not enough as Indian bowlers produced an impressive combined effort to wrap up a comfortable win for the team. India will now take on defending champions England in the second semi-final on Thursday, June 27. It will be a replay of the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final where England defeated India by ten wickets.
