Thiruvananthapuram: In a shocking incident that has raised concerns over the poor infrastructure facilities of the government medical colleges, a CPI leader named Ravindran Nair was stuck in an elevator of the Thiruvananthapuram medical college for two days even after trying to reach out to the technical team.
The incident that has embarrassed the medical college authorities came to light when the lift operator managed to open the faulty lift Monday morning at 6am as the family of Ravindran had filed a man missing complaint on Saturday.
Ravindran was a patient who had sought treatment at the government medical college for his backpain.
As per police, Ulloor native and Thirumala CPI local secretary got stuck inside the elevator on Saturday afternoon after he was about to meet the doctor to submit his medical records.
As per medical college police, while returning around noon, Raveendran took the lift from the ground floor of the hospital to the first floor. However, the elevator suddenly malfunctioned and shook violently. Raveendran’s mobile phone slipped from his hand and broke during the incident, leaving him unable to contact anyone to inform that he was trapped inside.
“I kept pressing the alarm button, but no one came. I also tried the emergency telephone inside the elevator, but no one answered,” Ravindran told the regional media persons.
On Tuesday morning, the lift operator opened the elevator and found Raveendran lying on the floor, exhausted. Ravindran was immediately taken to the doctor and was provided the medical aid.
According to the police, Ravindran visited the Orthopedic department of the government medical college for treatment. The doctor had asked Ravindran to submit his medical records and following which he had gone home and then returned by afternoon.
Ravindran who had to meet the doctor on the top floor of the hospital availed the elevator facility. However, midway the elevator stopped functioning and following which he was stuck. Even though Ravindran tried to reach out to the technicians by pressing the alarm button in the elevator, it was not working. Ravindran’s also tried to reach out to the emergency telephone number, however, no one answered.
The medical college authorities have sought an explanation from the engineering department of the medical college on the matter and have asked them to file a report in a week’s time.
Ravindrans relatives had filed a man missing complaint on Saturday afternoon after they could not trace him after he left his home for the hospital.
Health department initiates action
Three employees including two lift operators have been suspended pending investigation after the incident was reported.
The decision to suspend comes after an initial probe by a team of joint director, superintendent and the principal on the incident. Health minister Veena George had directed for the probe following the complaint registered with the Medical college police.
