Water levels rising steadily across rivers, dams in Kerala as orange alert issued in 7 districts

 

Idukki: Kerala witnessed the season’s highest rainfall on Wednesday with the state disaster management authority (KSDMA) informing that rainfall exceeded the normal levels, averaging 69.6 mm across the state.

As the rainfall intensifying across the state due to the south west monsoon gathering strength under the influence of westerly winds over the Kerala coast. The weather department has sounded an orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode districts and the rest seven districts comes under the yellow alert.

A holiday has been declared for all educational institutions including professional colleges in Pathanamthitta, Wayanad, Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Wayanad.

Among the districts, Kottayam recorded the highest rainfall with 103.mm. In the specific regions, Kidangoor received the highest rainfall of the season with 199mm (In the last 24 hours).

Following the heavy downpour across the state, revenue minister K Rajan convened a meeting where all the district collectors of the state were present to discuss the current situation pertaining to the rain and the challenges ahead so as to take the necessary steps going forward.

In view of continuing heavy rains for the past two days, a night travel ban has been imposed in the hilly areas of Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts by the district administrations.

Houses were damaged, trees uprooted, and water levels rose steadily in rivers and dams across Kerala after heavy rains accompanied by strong winds continued to lash several parts of the state on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, 20 persons belonging to seven families were shifted to relief camps in Kanayannur taluk in Kakkanad village of Ernakulam district. High tides and sea incursions were reported in districts like Thrissur and Ernakulam, and landslides wreaked havoc in the hilly regions of Kozhikode district.Several houses have been damaged in Alappuzha, Kannur, and Idukki districts following heavy downpour and winds since Tuesday night, authorities said.
