‘Cricket should improve…’: Rishabh Pant on viral field-set clip during 1st BAN Test

New Delhi: Team India wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant had a memorable outing in his comeback Test match as he donned whites for India after more than a year and a half, taking on Bangladesh in the first Test in Chennai. He made heads turn and asserted why he is still one of the best choices for the selectors when it comes to the Indian Test team. Showcasing a great character, he went on to smash his sixth Test century and help India in an emphatic 280-run win.

His innings (109) was not just about hitting the ball with the bat but also showed how great of a teammate he is when it comes to providing support from the other end. Been out of the red-ball action for long, Pant’s excellent road to recovery is indeed bearing him fruits. He was on a song alongside Shubman Gill (119*) as both stitched a match-winning partnership of 167 runs.

In a video that has been uploaded by the BCCI on its social media account, Pant reflected on his memorable Test comeback, recalling what went through his mind during all the major events. Besides his quick century that was laced with 13 fours and four sixes, Pant reminisced about helping the Bangladesh team with the field setting.

“Arey idhar ayega ek (one fielder here),” Pant was caught saying on the stump mic during his century innings, the video of which instantly went viral. The Indian cricket fans lauded Pant’s humour in the middle of the game and the moment also highlighted how composed Pant remains even when in action. Recalling the viral incident, Pant reasoned what made him help his opponents.

“I think the understanding of the game for me is that cricket should improve wherever you play. So I was just trying to help the other team that you can set a fielder here,” he chuckled.

What Pant said on camaraderie with Gill

While taking on the bowlers, Pant said he was nervous as it was his comeback game but there was a fire inside him that wanted him to go for a ton, which eventually happened. On his partnership with Gill, Pant said, “When you have a great relationship outside the field, it really helps to bat with that guy. Because when you share a great bon outside, you understand how that other person is thinking and how the game is moving around. “We just wanted to make ourselves relaxed and stitch a great partnership,” Pant added.
