New Delhi: Barcelona star Dani Olmo missed training with Spain ahead of their clash against Switzerland for the UEFA Nations League 2024-25, raising concerns for Barcelona. The former Leipzig midfielder had to be substituted during the final minutes of Spain’s opening Nations League game. Spain manager Luis de La Fuente had mentioned that Olmo sustained injury during Spain’s game against Serbia.
The La Roja manager didn’t give a proper update on Olmo’s further participation with the team. Barcelona will keep a close tab on the midfielder and young talent Lamine Yamal, who has been deemed to be overburdened with international fixtures. Talking about the same, de La Fuente mentioned the need to strike a balance and said that Spain were lucky to have Yamal’s talent at their disposition.
The 63-year-old manager felt that players had to keep themselves fit for 180 minutes of play during September. De La Fuente further pointed out that the debate of overburden on footballers has been going on for a while. However, he noted that all international games couldn’t be pushed to June after commencing an intense season with clubs.

Tactical changes to Luis de La Fuente’s squad
Though media sources have confirmed that the 26-year-old has suffered a minor injury after tests confirmed the same, it is to be seen how Olmo plays in the draw against Switzerland. One of the obvious moves could be to make him start at No. 9 with Pedri placed behind him as an attacking midfielder. Media speculation is that Olmo might not be in the starting XI to reduce any further injury threat.
De La Fuente’s decision to include Yamal in the start drew some criticism from Barca fans and concern from the club as well after the 17-year-old had picked an injury during Barcelona’s game against Real Valladolid. During the international break, Barca have already suffered setbacks with both Robert Lewandowski and Fermin Lopez picking up injuries and would like to keep every one of their remaining resources in the best shape.
