New Delhi: David Moyes has been re-appointed as Everton boss, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Merseyside club. Everton owners The Friedkin Group (TFG) were targeting the Scottish manager to succeed Sean Dyche following his exit on Thursday.
The 61-year-old noted that it was “great to be back” to the side having already enjoyed 11 years at Goodison Park. He further commented that he didn’t hesitate once to take on the offer to rejoin his old club. He hoped that along with TFG, they would be able to rebuild Everton. As Everton played for the final season at the Goodison Park, it was important to keep the players motivated.

Moyes had previously managed Everton from 2002 until 2013 and has since been on managerial stints with Manchester United, Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham twice. Since leaving West Ham at the end of last season, where he had won the Europa Conference League in 2023, Moyes hasn’t been at the helm of any other club.
David Moyes first task at Everton
Negotiations between Moyes and TFG had progressed swiftly and Moyes is set to take part in the training on Saturday itself. TFG view Moyes as the ideal candidate who can help Everton’s Premier League survial, which happens to be the top priority before they move to their new arena at Bramley-Moore Dock. Currently, the Toffees are placed 16th in the points table and are separated from the relegation zone by just one point.
The top management of Everton also want Moyes to build a solid foundation for their long-run ambitions. Everton executive chairman Marc Watts commented on Moyes’s return and believed that the former West Ham coach had come on board with the side at a crucial point. Expressing their delight at his appointment, Watts noted that Moyes already had been with the club for over a decade and is seen as the right man to lead the team in their final season at Goodison Park.
Yesterday the Toffees had announced Dyche’s exit from the side just hours before the side was due to play in the FA Cup third-round game against Peterborough, coming into the game on the back of a five-game winless streak in the Premier League. They have managed to take only 17 points from their 19 games.
Under Moyes, Everton had made nine top-10 finishes in the Premier League and even saw them go to the qualifying stages of the Champions League in 2005 and a place in the FA Cup final in 2009. He left the club in 2013, to take over Manchester United’s helm from Sir Alex Ferguson and was sacked just 10 months into his stint. Last season Moyes had taken West Ham to the quarter-final of the Europa League having already ended the club’s 43-year-long pursuit of a silverware with the Europa Conference League victory the year before.
