New Delhi: Defending champion Grigor Dimitrov had to retire midway from his semifinal match of the Brisbane International on Saturday, giving Jiri Lehecka a clear shot at a second Australian Open title. Dimitrov, who was the defending champion at the Brisbane International, left the game with a groin injury which saw him in pain.
While the tennis star was trailing 6-4, 4-4, he received treatment on his groin and hip region at the Pat Rafter Arena. He had to go off the court and then attempted to play one more time before retiring to send the 23-year-old opponent into his fourth ATP final. Former world number three Dimitrov has just a week left to recover before the Australian Open begins on January 12 in Melbourne. Meanwhile, Lehecka had clinched last year’s Adelaide International title, his first ATP singles tournament win.
Lehecka hopes for Dimitrov’s quick recovery
Jiri Lehecka, post the game, hoped for a quick recovery for Grigor Dimitrov, assuring that he will be all right very soon. He even said that he wanted the match to end in a different manner and not like this. He further added that the Bulgarian tennis player was doing fine in the first set and the first half of the second set.
“I hope it’s nothing serious for Grigor; the first set and first half of the second had a good level,” Lehecka said. “I’d like to finish the match in a different way, but hopefully he’ll be all right.”
