Despite guiding India to the second ICC title within a year, skipper Rohit Sharma found no place in the Team of the Tournament of the ICC Champions Trophy. India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in the final in Dubai on Monday to win their third Champions Trophy title. A day after India’s historic win, ICC unveiled a 12-member team on Monday which included five Indians but Rohit was not among the star-studded names.
New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner, who ended up on the losing side was named the captain of the team. While Rohit scored a match-winning 76 (83) against New Zealand to power India to their third Champions Trophy title on Sunday, March 09, he didn’t have a tournament to remember with the bat in the lead up to the summit clash.
New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra and Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran were picked as openers in place of Rohit. Kiwi batting all-rounder Ravindra was named Player of the Tournament for finishing as the highest run-getter with 263 runs from four innings.
Five Indians in CT 2025 Team of the Tournament
Indian batting stalwarts Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were picked as number three and four batters respectively. Kohli finished as the fifth-highest run-getter with 218 runs in 5 matches including a century while Iyer enjoyed a more productive tournament and sat in the second spot with 243 runs in 5 matches including two half-centuries.
Meanwhile, KL Rahul was selected as the wicketkeeper of the team, having inflicted six dismissals in the tournament and scoring 140 runs in 4 innings at a tournament-best average of 140.
New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips and Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai were picked as the two all-rounders.
Phillips’ all-round contribution was crucial to NZ’s run into the final. The batting all-rounder scored 177 runs from five innings, scalped two wickets, saved a lot of runs in the field and grabbed some sensational catches. Meanwhile, Omarzai finished as the top wicket-taker for Afghanistan with seven wickets from three matches, including a five-wicket haul against England.
Santner was slotted at number eight owing to his outstanding leadership skills and spin-bowling prowess. Santner’s Kiwi compatriot, Matt Henry, who missed out on playing the final due to a shoulder injury, was picked as the seamer along with India’s Mohammed Shami.
Henry finished as the highest wicket-taker of the tournament with ten wickets from four matches, while Shami picked up nine wickets from five games. India spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who also finished with nine wickets, was picked as the spinner while Axar Patel was named as the 12th man.
