Did protestors in Bangladesh set cricketer Liton Das’ house on fire? The truth behind viral tweets

New Delhi: Bangladesh is currently in turmoil after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post and left the country. Hasina fled from Bangladesh on Monday following a violent uprising and protests against her throughout the nation. Bangladesh’s Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Monday said in a televised statement that an interim government will be formed in the nation after Hasina’s resignation.

What began as protests against preferential job quotas eventually became a movement leading to Hasina’s downfall after hundreds were killed in the crackdown by the security forces. The protests have since continued amid fears that the minorities in the nation will also be targetted by the protestors after Hasina’s fall.

After the Bangladesh Prime Minister fled the country on Tuesday, tweets and posts went viral on social media claiming that cricketer Liton Das’ house was targeted by the protestors. It was contended that Das’ house was set on fire by the protestors. Das is a Bengali Hindu cricketer, who has been representing Bangladesh in international cricket for several years now.

Did protestors set Liton Das’ house on fire in Bangladesh?

No. The posts and pictures going viral on social media claiming that Liton Das’ house was set on fire by the protestors are fake. The house being burnt down in the pictures is of former Bangladesh cricket team captain Mashrafe Mortaza. The protestors targeted Mortaza’s house as he is an MP with the ruling party, Hasina’s Awami League. The protestors also targeted the houses of several other leaders of the Awami League.

An old video of former Bangladesh captain Shakib-Al-Hasan also went viral on social media where he was seen speaking about supporting students in some initiative. It was claimed that Shakib was supporting the ongoing students’ protest in Bangladesh against PM Hasina. However, the claims are not true as it is an old video from 2018 where Shakib supported the students in some other issue.
