New Delhi: Virat Kohli has been rested from the first round of matches in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024-25 due to workload management. A number of India regulars will be in action in the domestic red-ball tournament to prepare for the Test series against Bangladesh at home next month. The likes of Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal among others will be in action in the first round of the Duleep Trophy.
Kohli along with Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah was allowed to skip the domestic tournament. The senior India batter will return to action when India lock horns with Bangladesh in the two-match Test series starting on September 19. It will be Kohli’s first Test appearance for India in 2024 since January as the Team India star has played only 1 Test match so far this year.
Kohli’s only Test appearance in 2024 has come against South Africa as the former India captain pulled out of the entire home series against England this year due to his son’s birth. Despite missing Kohli, India beat England 4-1 in the five-match series riding on impressive performances from the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan among others.
Jasprit Bumrah has as many Test runs as Virat Kohli in 2024
Having played only 1 Test match so far this year, Kohli has only 58 runs to his name in the longest format in 2024 which is the same as fast bowler Bumrah. Bumrah has played five Test matches for India so far this year and has scored as many runs as Kohli.
Jaiswal is the leading run-getter for India in Tests this year with an impressive 740 runs from six matches at a brilliant average of 74, including two centuries and 3 fifties. Jaiswal top-scored for India in the home Test series against England with a whopping 712 runs from 5 matches averaging 89.
The young opener is followed by Shubman Gill in the second spot. Gill has amassed 498 runs for India in Test cricket in 2024 so far at an average of 49.80, including two centuries and two fifties. Indian skipper Rohit is in the third spot on the list with 455 runs to his name from six matches at an average of 45.50.
Kohli might not have gotten a chance to pile on runs in Test cricket in 2024 yet, but he will be hoping to get back among the runs when he returns for India in the 2-match series against Bangladesh.
