‘Didn’t even call him yesterday’: Swapnil Kusale’s parents on avoiding distractions before final

New Delhi: Indian shooter Swapnil Kusale’s parents reacted to the 28-year-old’s bronze medal in the men’s 50m rifle three positions at the Chateaurox Shooting Centre in the ongoing Paris Olympics on Thursday (August 1).

The 28-year-old Swapnil finished third in the 50m rifle three positions final with  a total score of 451.4 behind Ukraine’s Serhiy Kulish (461.3) and China’s Liu Yukun (463.6). The three positions of this event involved kneeling, prone and standing.

In the three series of kneeling, the Maharashtra shooter accumulated 153.3 points and 156.8 points in prone (three series). He shot a total of 101.5 from the two series of standing position. He climbed to third spot from sixth after the completion of the second series of standing.

Swapnil became the first shooter to claim a medal in the men’s 50m rifle three positions event at the Olympics.

“We let him focus on his work and didn’t even call him yesterday so that he should not get distracted. For the last 10 to 12 years, he was mostly away from home, focusing on his marksmanship. People have been calling up incessantly to congratulate us,” Swapnil’s father Suresh Kusale told reporters in Kolhapur, as reported by news agency PTI.

According to a Mid-Day report, Suresh Kusale took a loan of Rs 25 lakh besides selling their two plots of lands in their village in order to fund Swapnil’s heavy expenses to pursue his shooting career.

“He studied in a public school and developed a liking for shooting while at Sangli. He later went to Nashik for further training in the sport,” Swapnil’s mother told reporters from their villages in Kolhapur.

Swapnil bags India’s third medal at Paris Olympics

Swapnil Kusale’s bronze in the men’s 50m rifle third positions is India’s third medal in this Olympics edition. Interestingly, all three medals have come from Indian shooters thus far. Youngster Manu Bhaker bagged the first medal with her bronze in women’s 10m air pistol event. Bhaker later paired with Sarabjot Singh to add another bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team.
