New Delhi: Iga Swiatek needed only an hour to enter the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday, where she will face Emma Raducanu.

Five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek made short work of Rebecca Sramkova, winning 6-0, 6-2 while former US Open champion Raducanu edged out Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-5.

Pole Swiatek is chasing her first title in Melbourne and took only 27 minute to wrap up the first set, her 27th bagel in Grand Slams since debuting in the main draw debut in 2019.

It is the the most by any woman in that span, much ahead of Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka (both nine). Swiatek is also the only tennis player, male or female, to advance to atleast the third round of every major tournament for 20 times in a row since 2020.

Since the 2019 US Open, she hasn’t lost before the third round in a Grand Slam.

Also on Thursday, No. 9 Daria Kasatkina beat Wang Yafan 6-2, 6-0 while 32nd seed Dayana Yastremska brushed aside Danka Kovinic 6-0, 6-1. Three-time Slam finalist Ons Jabeur also entered the third round, winning 7-5, 6-3 against Camila Osorio in the women’s singles section.

‘Felt solid’

“I felt really solid today and it was a really efficient game. I’m happy that I kept my focus,” Swiatek, who has progessed beyond the fourth round only once at the Asutralian Open, said.

She lost her World No. 1 billing to defending champion Aryna Sabalenka after being banned for a month due to doping last season.

The 23-year-old has hired a new coach Belgian Wim Fissette and said the partnership has begun well.

“He’s been great. I feel like he’s really supportive. And you know being on the women’s tour, I think it’s not easy especially when most of the coaches are men. They also need to understand what we go through sometimes,” she said.
