New Delhi: Leaving behind the doping brawl, Jannik Sinner shone on Sunday as he defeated USA’s Taylor Fritz in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in a hard-fought men’s singles final battle at the Flushing Meadows’ Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Sunday. He got his hands on the US Open silverware for the first time which was also his second Grand Slam win of the career.
The triumph is also his second Grand Slam win of the year, having won the Australian Open 2024. He expressed his pleasure after winning the title for the first time, highlighting the hard work he put in during the practice session, which finally got him to the trophy podium at the Meadows.
In his address to the audience after the final, the 23-year-old dedicated the win to his ill aunt saying that she is an important person in his life and that he doesn’t know how much longer he will have her in his life.
“I love tennis, I practice a lot for these stages but I realise that there is also a life away from the tennis courts and I would like to dedicate this to my aunt who is not feeling well. I don’t know how much longer I will have her in my life. It’s nice I can still share these moments with her. She is an important person in my life and still is. If there was a wish I could make I would wish good health on everyone but unfortunately it’s not possible,” the Italian said in the on-court presentation ceremony.
