New Delhi: Former Australian cricketer Brad Haddin has reckoned that Indian batters won’t be able to survive against Australian pacers in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Punjab Kings assistant coach believes Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will have a challenging period in the uncharted territory of Australia, where bounce will play a crucial role.
India have faced some appalling batting collapses in their Test innings in the recent years. After being bowled out for their lowest Test total in Adelaide (36/9), India were bundled up for 46/10 in the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru. The 3-0 whitewash to the Black Caps on home soil exposed India’s batting frailty against spin bowling.
Many experts believe that in Australia Indian batters will find their foot as the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are known to play well against fast bowling. However, Haddin, who played 66 Test matches for Australia from 2008 to 2015, believes India will struggle against pace troika of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood Down Under.
“I don’t think that the Indian batters are going to stand up to our quicks,” Haddin said on on the LiSTNR Sport podcast.
‘Not sure whether Yashasvi Jaiswal is going to handle the bounce’: Haddin
Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has made a terrific start to his Test careers with some match-defining knocks in West Indies and India. He has made 1407 runs in 14 Test matches at an average of 56.28 with the help of eight fifties and three centuries. Haddin feels that Jaiswal will have a challenge in countering the bounce in the five-Test series.
“I know (Yashasvi) Jaiswal is a really good player, but he hasn’t come out and seen Australia before, so I’m not sure whether he is going to handle the bounce. Opening in Perth is hard work,” he added.
Australia and India will play the first Test match between November 22 and 26 at the Perth Stadium in Perth. India are the reigning champions of Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having won 2-1 in the 2023 series at home last year.
