New Delhi: Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh advised Gary Kirsten to not ‘waste his time’ and step down as the head coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team. His comments come after Kirsten’s scathing criticism of the Pakistan team following their disastrous campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Pakistan bowed out of the tournament from the group stage.
Babar Azam & Co. suffered back-to-back defeats against USA and India in their first two games and there was no coming back for them as they failed to make it to the Super Eight. Pakistan did manage to bounce back and win their remaining two matches against Canada and Ireland but it was not enough for them to make it to the next round.
As per reports in Pakistan media, Kirsten questioned the unity in the Pakistan squad in his review of the team’s abysmal performance in the tournament after their campaign ended with a nervy win against Ireland on Sunday. Kirsten also said that the Pakistan players are way behind other countries in terms of skillset and raised questions on the fitness levels of some players in the squad.
Reacting to Kirsten’s comments, Harbhajan took to Twitter to urge the former India World Cup-winning coach to leave the Pakistan job. He also requested him to return back to India and coach the Indian team while calling him a great coach and a mentor.
“Don’t waste ur time there Gary.. Come back to Coach Team INDIA. Gary Kirsten One of the rare gems/ A great coach, mentor, friend to all in the 1202 team. Our winning coach of the 2011 World Cup. Special Man Gary @Gary_Kisten,” Harbhajan Singh wrote in a post on X.

Kirsten had joined Pakistan as their new head coach only in the last week of May ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup 2024. However, it didn’t take long for the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning coach to understand the issues in the current Pakistan squad and share his feedback with the team. Pakistan had started the tournament as one of the favourites but were eliminated after one of their worst performances in recent times.
