Mumbai: Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He was the youngest of five siblings. His father, Jainulabdeen, was a boat owner, and his mother was Ashiamma. To support his struggling family, Kalam walked long distances for his education and distributed newspapers in his town while still a student. From an early age, he exhibited a deep fascination with space, rockets, and aeroplanes.
After completing the eighth grade at Rameswaram Elementary School, he went on to study at Schwartz Higher Secondary School in Ramanathapuram. Later, he pursued a degree in Physics at St. Joseph’s College in Tiruchirappalli, graduating in 1954. Driven by his passion for aircraft, he then studied aeronautical engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) in Chennai.
As Project Director, he significantly contributed to the development of India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III), successfully launching the Rohini satellite into near-Earth orbit in July 1980, making India a member of the exclusive Space Club.
Dr. Kalam played a pivotal role in the evolution of ISRO’s launch vehicle program, particularly the PSLV configuration. After two decades at ISRO mastering launch vehicle technologies, he became the Chief Executive of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) at the Defence Research and Development Organisation, where he spearheaded the development of the AGNI and PRITHVI missiles and advanced indigenous capabilities through a network of institutions.
From July 1992 to December 1999, Dr. Kalam served as the Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and Secretary of the Department of Defence Research & Development. During this period, he led the weaponisation of strategic missile systems and the Pokhran-II nuclear tests, establishing India as a nuclear weapon state. He also promoted self-reliance in defence systems through multiple development projects, including the Light Combat Aircraft.
As Chairman of the Technology Information, Forecasting, and Assessment Council (TIFAC), Dr Kalam, alongside 500 experts, developed Technology Vision 2020, a roadmap to transform India from a developing to a developed nation. He served as the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India from November 1999 to November 2001, evolving policies, strategies, and missions for various development applications. He also chaired the Scientific Advisory Committee to the Cabinet (SAC-C) and led the India Millennium Mission 2020.
Dr. Kalam pursued academia as a Professor of Technology and Societal Transformation at Anna University, Chennai, starting in November 2001, focusing on teaching and research. He passionately aimed to inspire young minds for national development by engaging with high school students across the country.
His literary works, including ‘Wings of Fire,’ ‘India 2020 – A Vision for the New Millennium,’ ‘My Journey,’ and ‘Ignited Minds – Unleashing the Power Within India,’ have become household names and have been translated into many Indian languages.
Dr. Kalam is recognised as one of India’s most distinguished scientists, holding honorary doctorates from 30 universities and institutions. He received several prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan (1981), Padma Vibhushan (1990), and Bharat Ratna (1997), India’s highest civilian honour.
On July 25, 2002, Dr. Kalam became the 11th President of India, focusing on transforming India into a developed nation by 2020.
Regretfully, on July 27, 2015, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam tragically passed away from cardiac arrest while delivering a speech in Shillong. He was 83 years old when he collapsed during a presentation at IIM Shillong.
