Paris Olympics 2024: Javier Mascherano speaks on the Argentina’s situation after Morocco clash

New Delhi: Argentina lost 2-1 to Morocco in the Men’s Olympic 2024 opening game in Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, in Saint-Étienne. At the extra 15 minutes of injury time, Argentina would have made it 2-2, with Cristian Medina scoring the equalizer. However, the goal was declared offside two hours after the match was suspended due to Moroccan fans invading the pitch. The match continued after the situation was brought under control, and the remaining three minutes were played out accordingly.

After the game, Argentina manager Javier Mascherano didn’t mince his words on the situation that his side has faced since coming to France. He claimed that the team was robbed during their practice session ahead of their opening game. Speaking about the hostile environment that the team is in, Mascherano mentioned that miscreants had entered the grounds during the training session and had robbed personal items of the players in the team, specifically the belongings of Thiago Almada.

The former Argentina midfielder said, “Thiago Almada was missing a watch, rings, and everything at training at the Olympics.  Mascherano mentioned that the team didn’t want to speak about the ordeal after the training.

The former Argentina reflected on the game and expressed his displeasure with the result of the game. Mascherano didn’t provide further details on the alleged robbery and instead voiced his displeasure about Wednesday’s events. The former Barcelona player mentioned that the team was informed that the game had ended 2-2. Mascherano mentioned that he had never witnessed a security lapse of this scale ever during his playing career. However, after a two-hour delay, the score was reverted to 2-1, resulting in a lot of confusion and outrage.

Argentina and Inter-Miami star Lionel Messi reacted to the game and expressed his “shock” over the second goal not being given and Argentina’s eventual loss. On his Instagram story, Messi wrote the Spanis word, ‘Insolito’, which in English translates as ‘unbelievable’. After the game, even Argentina centre-back Nicolas Otamendi called the whole event a “historic disgrace.” Argentina will next face Iraq at the 2024 Paris Olympics on 27th July.
