At the extra 15 minutes of injury time, Argentina would have made it 2-2, with Cristian Medina scoring the equalizer. However, the goal was declared offside two hours after the match was suspended due to Moroccan fans invading the pitch. The match continued after the situation was brought under control, and the remaining three minutes were played out accordingly.
After the game, Argentina manager Javier Mascherano didn’t mince his words on the situation that his side has faced since coming to France. He claimed that the team was robbed during their practice session ahead of their opening game. Argentina and Inter-Miami star Lionel Messi reacted to the game and expressed his “shock” over the second goal not being given and Argentina’s eventual loss. On his Instagram story, Messi wrote the Spanis word, ‘Insolito’, which in English translates as ‘unbelievable’. After the game, even Argentina centre-back Nicolas Otamendi called the whole event a “historic disgrace.” Argentina will next face Iraq at the 2024 Paris Olympics on 27th July.
