New Delhi: Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo on Thursday announced retirement across all formats of cricket. His last appearance in competitive cricket was made during the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 for Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR).
Ahead of the 12th season of the CPL, Bravo announced this would be his swansong in the T20 competition, but a groin injury cut short his full-fledged participation. With 129 wickets in 107 matches at an economy rate of 8.74, the West Indies veteran will finish as the highest wicket-taker while leaving.
He also has the most wickets in all competitions of T20 cricket, having picked 631 scalps from 546 innings, including two five-wicket hauls and 11 four-wicket hauls.
“Today is the day I say goodbye to the game that has given me everything. From the age of five, I knew this was what I wanted to do—this was the sport I was destined to play. I had no interest in anything else, and I dedicated my entire life to you. In return, you gave me the life I dreamed of for myself and my family. For that, I can’t thank you enough,” Bravo wrote on his latest Instagram post.
“Twenty-one years as a professional cricketer – it’s been an incredible journey, filled with many highs and a few lows. Most importantly, I was able to live my dream because I gave you 100 at every step.”
“As much as I’d love to continue this relationship, it’s time to face reality. My mind wants to keep going, but my body can no longer endure the pain, the breakdowns, and the strain. I can’t put myself in a position where I might let down my teammates, my fans, or the teams I represent,” he further wrote.
A brief look at Dwayne Bravo’s cricket journey
Bravo played his first competitive cricket in the Caribbean circuit in 2001-2002. He came into the West Indies side for the first time in an One-Day International match in April 2004 against England in Georgetown. Three months later, he made his Test debut against the same opposition at Lord’s. His T20I debut, the format he attained enough success at, was made in 2006 against New Zealand in 2006 in Auckland.
Bravo picked up 363 international wickets across formats – 86 in Tests, 199 in ODIs and 78 in T20Is. He has the most T20I dismissals for the West Indies with all-rounder Jason Holder (66) following him. The 40-year-old Bravo was part of the two T20 World Cups West Indies won in 2012 (Sri Lanka) and 2016 (India) under the leadership of Daren Sammy.
He has donned the shirt for numerous T20 franchises across the globe with his major achievements made in the CPL and the Indian Premier League (IPL). He won titles in IPL, CPL, Big Bash League (BBL), and Pakistan Super League (PSL) among major T20 competitions.
He was appointed as bowling coach of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2023 after representing the franchise in 130 matches from 2011 to 2022.
