New Delhi: England white-ball skipper Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Australia at home, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the development on Sunday. Yorkshire batter Harry Brook will lead the side in the five ODI matches scheduled from September 19 to 29.
A calf injury sustained on the left leg, which kept the England wicketkeeper-batter out from the three-match T20I series, has once again deterred his path to participate in his first international match since the T20 World Cup semifinal exit in June.
As Buttler will continue his recovery, Brook, who has played 15 One-Day Internationals for the Three Lions, will stand-in for the 34-year-old. Leicestershire left-arm pacer Josh Hull, who made his Test debut at The Oval against Sri Lanka earlier this month, has also been sidelined from the ODI squad due to quad injury.
All-rounder Liam Livingstone was added to the ODI squad following his blitzkrieg in the second T20I in Cardiff that helped England level the T20I series 1-1. Lancashire’s Phil Salt was named captain of the T20I squad after Buttler was ruled out.

England to play five ODIs against Australia
After the series-decider of the T20Is in Manchester on Sunday, England will shift their focus to the 50-over format. The two traditional rivals will engage in five ODI matches to kick off their preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will take place in February-March window next year.
Trent Bridge will host the first ODI match in Nottingham on September 19 before the two teams move to Leeds to play the second game at the Headingley. The Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street will host the third ODI while the iconic Lord’s will witness the action of fourth match. The final ODI match will be held at the County Ground in Bristol.
