Eoin Morgan reasons for Brendon McCullum to fill vacant England head coach role in white-ball team

New Delhi: Former England skipper Eoin Morgan wants Brendon McCullum to coach the white-ball teams of England as well. The New Zealand legend is already taking care of England’s Test team, having refurbished their approach and gameplay inside out, due to which Morgan feels McCullum would be an apt choice to be given the command of the limited overs as well. England currently plays Sri Lanka in the 2nd Test at the Lord’s in London.

Morgan wants the England management to convince McCullum of the opportunity as the position has been lying vacant since the T20 World Cup 2024. Matthew Mott was fired as England’s head coach after the team’s abysmal performances in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the T20 World Cup 2024. Ex-England batter Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach for the England team during their upcoming white-ball series against Australia.

Morgan possessed strong views about it and said that if he was the head of the English and Wales Cricket Board, he would have approached McCullum for the vacant role, considering his success with the red-ball side. The 37-year-old also put forth arguments that if timing is the issue for McCullum, he could get onboard on a hybrid model, just like Mickey Arthur with the Pakistan team ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023.

“If I was Rob Key I would be asking him what can we do to make this happen. He has made such a significant difference to this Test side, he can help Jos Buttler and his team. Even if that was a hybrid version in some form or another. He wouldn’t have to be there day in and day out for each and every bilateral series. You talk about players being mobile because of the landscape of the game. Why can’t we do that with coaches when the options arise?” Morgan told Sky Sports.

McCullum’s effect

He further added that England’s head coach should be the most sought-after job and it would be better to bring in McCullum for some bilateral series throughout the year rather than him going for the IPL. Morgan wanted McCullum to change the environment of the white-ball team’s dressing room as well, just as he did with Ben Stokes & co.

McCullum has been highly beneficial for the Three Lions as they play a fresh brand of cricket under him. They drew the Ashes series at home against Australia in 2023 but couldn’t fare better than India in a five-match Test series earlier this year. What McCullum is doing with the Test team of England has been highly praised by the cricket pundits across the globe.

Eoin Morgan feels Brendon McCullum would be a perfect suitor for the role of head coach for England’s white-ball team, a position that has been vacant since the T20 World Cup 2024.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
