Equity Mutual Fund inflows reach all time high in May 2024

New Delhi: According to the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), inflows in equity mutual funds have reached all-time high levels in May 2024. The inflows have jumped 83 per cent month-to-month (MoM) to Rs 34,697 crore in May from Rs 18,917 crore in the preceding month. Moreover, on yearly basis, the inflows have amplified 10 times from Rs 3,240 crore crore in May 2023. Inflows in equity mutual funds have been positive continuously for more than last three years now.

Since March 2021, not a single month has gone by where net-outflow of funds from equity schemes was witnessed. As a result, the Asset Under Management (AUM) of equity mutual funds have swelled 53 per cent YoY to Rs 25.39 lakh crore in May 2024 from Rs 16.56 lakh crore in the year ago month.

Categories of equity oriented schemes which saw heavy inflows in May 2024 were thematic or sectoral funds followed by flexi caps, small caps and others. While, categories that faced outflows in the same month were Equity Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS) and focussed funds.

All-time highest inflows in thematic funds

The thematic or sectoral funds received inflows worth Rs 19,213 crore in May 2024 up 114 times than in same month a year ago. The AUM of thematic funds has swelled 82 per cent YoY to Rs 3.37 lakh crore in May 2024 from Rs 1.86 lakh crore in the year ago month. Sectoral funds had second highest AUM in the entire equity funds industry. As a result of record-breaking inflows in equity mutual funds, the total AUM reached Rs 25.39 lakh crore in May 2024.

Debt Mutual Funds Inflows Plunges

On the other hand, the inflows in debt mutual funds fell 78 per cent MoM to Rs 42,294 crore in May from Rs 1.89 lakh crore in April 2024 . Among debt categories, all categories witnessed inflows except for short-duration funds, medium-duration funds, dynamic bond funds, credit risk, gilt funds, and floater funds. While, liquid funds recorded the highest inflow of around Rs 25,873 crore in the same month.

The total AUM of debt mutual funds stood at Rs 15.11 lakh crore as of May 2024. While, that of the entire industry stood at Rs 58.64 lakh crore.
