Ernest Nuamah ‘disappeared’ during medical at Fulham on transfer deadline day – Reports

New Delhi: Transfer window deadline day has seen multiple dramatic occurrences regarding transfers in recent years, and Lyon’s young star Ernest Nuamah found himself at the centre of a transfer saga that ended in chaos just minutes before the end of the 2024 summer transfer window. Reports from L’Équipe and Fabrizio Romano revealed that the 20-year-old Ghanaian winger was on the brink of joining Fulham for €19 million.

The deal, which had initially looked promising, fell apart when Nuamah, who had agreed terms with Everton earlier, broke down in tears during his medical with Fulham. His emotional distress was a clear sign of his reluctance to leave Lyon, a club he deeply cherishes. As the deadline approached, the situation took a dramatic turn, leading to the collapse of the move.

What went wrong in the transfer deal?

The move to Fulham appeared to be a done deal. According to Romano, Lyon and Fulham had reached an agreement, and Nuamah was already undergoing his medical. Everything pointed to a straightforward transfer. But then, out of nowhere, problems started cropping up.

L’Équipe later revealed the key issue. According to them, Nuamah didn’t want to leave Lyon. Despite the deal being in place, the young winger, who has a deep connection with the French club, felt uneasy about the move. As the clock ticked down on deadline day, his emotions got the better of him. He reportedly broke down in tears during the medical, overwhelmed by the thought of leaving.

Things took a bizarre turn when Nuamah suddenly disappeared during the final stages of the medical. Even his agent couldn’t locate him. With time running out and no sign of the player, the deal fell through. Afterward, Lyon’s owner, John Textor, apologised to Nuamah, admitting that the player had felt forced into a move he didn’t want. Textor reassured him that he was still a valued part of Lyon.

Nuamah, who managed three goals in 33 appearances last season, stays at Lyon. Despite the last-minute drama, the club held on to one of their brightest young talents. It will be interesting to see how the player is rewarded at the French club after a show of loyalty on the world stage.
