Chennai: After several complaints of overcharging and mismanagement of on-street parking, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has now planned to hire members from the Tamil Nadu Ex-Servicemen Corporation to manage the 14,000-odd on-street parking facilities in the city. Now, the management of the parking will be directly handled by the civic body and the fee will remain Rs 5 for two-wheelers and Rs 20 for cars.
Ex-Servicemen to manage on-street parking in Chennai
Corporation officials have said the public is not required to pay vehicle parking fees at Marina Beach, Besant Nagar Beach as of now. “Soon we are planning to carry out the fee collection work through the Tamil Nadu Ex-Servicemen’s Association, a pro-government organization. Already 55% of the total revenue is contracted to the corporation and 45% to the contracting company. The matter will be discussed with the Ex-Servicemen’s Association and a decision will be taken,” a senior official from the GCC said.
Earlier, the Greater Chennai Corporation permitted Tour Media Services Pvt Ltd and SS Tech on a contractual basis to collect tolls from motorists for vehicles parked here.
To increase the revenue of Chennai Corporation, the largest corporation in the state, the corporation administration has set up smart parking lots at more than 120 places including Chennai Marina Beach, Besant Nagar Beach, and Thiagaraya Nagar under the Smart City Project.
Chennai corporation started sealing hotels without parking space
The Greater Chennai Corporation has started sealing those who have not obtained trade licenses and that functioning without parking space. The officials have started checking if the hotels have obtained NOC from Traffic Police which is issued only if there is dedicated parking space. The civic body has so far identified 80 hotels without parking and 306 without trade licenses.
