New Delhi: Millions of years ago, dinosaurs used to roam on the surface of the Earth. They were the most dominant species on this planet, and they were huge. The fact that dinosaurs were of massive size is known from the fossils of those extinct creatures. We have seen them in films and got an idea about those humungous creatures. But how big were they really? In this article, we will try to find the answer to this question.
How big were the dinosaurs?
The fossils of dinosaurs which have been found over the years have painted a picture of the mammoth size of those creatures. According to the researchers, dinosaurs had some of the most extreme variations in size of any land animal group and it varied through the Triassic, early Jurassic, late Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
As per some reports, Argentinosaurus is the biggest dinosaur of all time and could possibly be the biggest land animal ever. To put it into context, the animal weighed around 77 tonnes, which is 17 times heavier than an African elephant. Also, there was the Supersaurus, which is said to be the longest dinosaur with a length of over 130 feet. Its size was 10 metres longer than the Brachiosaurus that we saw in the original Jurassic Park movie. Then there was Sauroposeidon, which could grow up to 69 ft tall. Its height was more than twice the height of an average house in the United Kingdom.
We are yet to tell you about the Spinosaurus, possibly the biggest land carnivore ever. Its length was 60 feet, its weight was around 10 tonnes and it was much bigger than T-Rex, once thought to be the biggest land predator of all time. Also, the Spinosaurus could swim, was able to run on two legs and had a relatively big brain for its size.
But not every dinosaur was small. Pendraig Milnerae, the oldest carnivore found in the UK had the size of a small chicken, while Compsognathus, a small bipedal carnivorous theropod measured around 28 inches to 30 inches. There was the Nemicolopterus which remains the smallest pterosaur discovered so far.
But in the end, the dinosaurs were clearly a group of animals whose sizes were very big on average. The likes of Diplodocus Carnegii and Giraffatitan Brancai were massive creatures. Others like Bruhathkayosaurus, Pellegrinasaurus, Argentinosaurus, Puertosaurus, Turiasaurus, Patagotitan, and Ruyangosaurus. The skeleton of one dinosaur known as Futalognkosaurus Dukei was found in western Argentina. It was about 100 feet long and that was thought to be only about 15 per cent of the animal. So while imagining the size of dinosaurs, we can give our imagination free rein and think of them as humungous creatures we see in films, for they were that in reality as well.
