Explained: How is wind power beneficial for the environment?

New Delhi: Climate change and global warming are the two threats which have put the very existence of this planet in jeopardy. And we can feel their effects with the rising global temperature and increasing heatwaves which have made our lives miserable. Over the centuries, the incessant usage of fossil fuels has impacted the environment by rapidly swelling the level of pollution. On top of that, the supply of fossil fuels is limited on Earth. Hence, we have to look at alternative energy resources and wind power has come up as an extremely viable option in recent years.

What is wind power?

Also known as wind energy, it is a type of renewable energy which uses the power of the wind to produce electricity. For this end, wind turbines are used. The moving air enables the turning motion of the blades of a turbine and that motion produces electrical energy.

In case someone is wondering, the moving air spins the blades of a wind turbine. That motion, in turn, spins a generator just downwind from the blades in the nacelle. Finally, the electricity is produced from the generator. It is a simple and extremely effective way to produce electricity.

How is it beneficial for the environment?

The biggest advantage of wind energy is the fact that it is a renewable energy source. It means that, unlike fossil fuels, the supply of this energy is unending and all we need is the wind to blow. If the turbines are improved further in the coming days and years, it will help them become more efficient which will ensure the supply of clean and reliable energy to people who live in less windy regions.

Moreover, wind turbines do not pollute the air or water by releasing emissions and their construction can be done by having a minimal impact on the environment and livelihoods of people. People like farmers who own lands can give some of it in lease to wind farms which will give those people a steady income source apart from agriculture.

Since wind energy is a clean energy, the turbines do not emit greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. As a result, it contributes less pollution into the air, oceans, and environment which will reduce the negative impact on the ecosystem. Not to mention the fact that it can be used to generate electricity in those remote places which are not able to access the utility grid for power.
