New Delhi: Team India clinched their second win in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, thumping Sri Lanka by 82 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. It was a second consecutive win for Women in Blue who boosted their chances of making it to the semifinals after routing their Asian rivals. India’s chances of qualifying for the knockout stage were dented a bit after they lost the opener to New Zealand, but they came good against arch-rival Pakistan.
After beating the Lankans, India clinched two more points in the Group A points table and are currently placed second, making a jump. They have got two wins and a loss out of the three games played so far. Australia continue to remain on the top with two wins out of two games while Pakistan follow India with a win and a loss in the two games. Similar is the condition of New Zealand who sit fourth while Sri Lanka are officially eliminated from the tournament, losing all three games.
Things are about to get exciting for all four contending teams, specially for India, Pakistan, and New Zealand. With a second win in succession, India Women’s Net Run Rate (NRR) has become a bit better than that of Pakistan’s. It is quite understood that only the top two teams from both groups will enter the semi-finals.

How can India qualify for semis of WT20 WC 2024?
Australia and India are currently tied at four points after winning respective two games but while India can reach a maximum of six points as they have just one group game remaining, Australia can take eight points with two games remaining. There are just two very clear scenarios of India making it into the semis and both involve their remaining clash with the Aussies.

If India defeat Australia: On Sunday, India will take on Australia in their final group-stage match and a win against them will keep them in contention for a place in the last four. Thereafter, if New Zealand win their remaining two games, it will be a three-way tie between India, New Zealand, and Australia at six points, considering Australia win their next clash against Pakistan. The two teams with the best NRR will advance into the semis then.
If Australia beat India: If India are beaten by Australia then they will hope that both New Zealand and Pakistan lose at least one of their remaining two fixtures. This case makes three teams tied on four points. However, even then, NRR will decide which of them will join Australia in the semis.
