Explained! India’s WTC final scenario after sensational victory in Kanpur Test

New Delhi: India thrashed Bangladesh by 7 wickets in the rain-marred 2nd Test at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on Tuesday, October 01 to complete a 2-0 series rout and extend their home dominance in the longest format. It was a record-extending 18th Test series win at home for India as the hosts pulled off a stunning victory in just six sessions after two days of complete washout in the game.

A result looked far from achievable after only 35 overs of action was possible on the first three days of the Test match due to a combination of bad weather and a poor drainage system at the Green Park Stadium. However, India batted out of their skin and bowled their hearts out to force a result inside just two sessions on Day 5 on Tuesday.

After bowling out Bangladesh for 233 runs in their first innings on Day 4, Indian batters went all guns blazing in their first innings to post 285/9 declared in just 34.4 overs. India shattered the records for the fastest team 50, 100, 150 and 250 as the likes of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul toyed with the Bangladesh bowling attack.

While Rohit set the tone with his 11-ball 23 laced with three sixes, Jaiswal top-scored with 72 off just 51 balls. Kohli made a sedate 47 off 35 balls while Rahul played a fabulous knock of 68 runs off 43 balls as India managed to gain a healthy lead of 51 runs on Day 2 itself, leaving the bowlers with just enough time to reduce Bangladesh to 26/2 at stumps on Day 4.

India continued their domination on Day 5 as the trio of R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah picked up a three-wicket haul apiece to skittle out Bangladesh for 146 runs in their second innings, ensuring a low-key target of 95 runs for India. Jaiswal slammed another brilliant half-century (51 off 45 balls) while Kohli remained not out on 29 as India chased down the target in just 17.2 overs in the post Lunch session to win comfortably by 7 wickets.

How can India qualify for the WTC final?

India are well on course to qualify for their third straight final in the World Test Championship after beating Bangladesh miraculously in the rain-marred 2nd Test in Kanpur. With a win percentage of over 74, India only need three more victories in their remaining 8 Test matches in the season to secure a spot in the WTC final.

India will host New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home later this month followed by a five-match series against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under. India need to win at least three of the remaining 8 Test matches to qualify for the WTC 2023-25 final.
