What is a laughing disorder?

The laughing disease is commonly called pseudobulbar affect (PBA). According to the Cleveland Clinic, it is a neurological condition that causes outbursts of uncontrolled or inappropriate laughing or crying. The episodes of the condition don’t match the internal emotional state of the individual.

This a disorder that develops as the result of a brain injury or underlying neurological disease, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). However, the episodes of laughing or crying may look appropiate for the triggering event, but they tend to be more hard to restrain. Sometimes, they can be very intense and serious, and may also last longer than one would generally expect.

PBA can have a significant impact on one’s life and the lives of their family members or caregivers. Moreover, at times, it can cause embarrassment and anxiety leading to withdrawal and social isolation.

How common is laughing disease?

As per the Cleveland Clinic, researchers estimate that 2 million to 7 million people in the United States have PBA. This range is large because the condition can vary in severity and it is often misdiagnosed.
