New Delhi: Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil has been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at the age of 41. He made the announcement recently at an event in Kerala. He revealed that he had spoken with a doctor regarding the same while visiting a children’s village and was informed that the condition can be treated if diagnosed at an early age. The actor’s diagnosis comes as a surprise for all his fans as it was so far believed to be a cause of concern as little was known about the disorder in adults.
Is ADHD in adults different in children and adults?
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr Nikhil Nayar, Psychiatrist at Sharda Hospital, the expert spoke about ADHD in adults.
“Adults with mental health difficulties are far more common than not. Millions of people worldwide are impacted by illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 264 million people worldwide suffer from depression alone. Problems with mental health have a big influence on life satisfaction. Severe emotional, psychological, and physical issues may result from them. Untreated mental health illnesses can cause people to feel depressed, anxious, and tired all the time. These symptoms can interfere with day-to-day functioning, interpersonal connections, and general well-being,” Dr Nayar.
The expert also went on to say that there is a close relationship between physical and emotional well-being. Obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are a few chronic physical problems that can be made worse by mental health disorders. On the other hand, issues with mental health can also result from physical health issues. For general health and well-being, mental health issues must be addressed.
Why it should be taken seriously?
Early detection and treatment of mental health disorders can significantly improve outcomes. Preventive measures and early intervention can reduce the severity of symptoms, improve recovery rates, and decrease the overall impact on individuals and society.
The stigma associated with mental health still exists, despite recent improvements. This may deter people from getting the care they need and reaching out for assistance. Discrimination and stigmatization can result in a lack of understanding and support from society, which makes healing even more difficult. Timely & adequate treatment by psychiatrist is the key
